Soul Saturday | Part 2 : Helping Land.

Tita Wilma, Fr. Sunny, and their friends contributed and organized this outreach activity for the children of Helping Land in collaboration with Project Pearls. While still in the US, Tita Wilma wrote and invited me to join them. I'm grateful she did. It was exactly the inspiration I needed.

We met, more or less, 500 children that day from two different sites in Tondo.

Despite the miserable situation, the kids seem happy. But as outsiders, it was heartbreaking for us to see. We knew that there was a better condition beyond this place and that they deserved a clean, healthy environment.

Tita Wilma asked the hard questions. "What's the point of all this? After this, what?"  She asked me, referring to the outreach, while looking at all the children who looked quite happy to see pancit and puto being prepared by the volunteers. "This is a respite from their daily life," I said.

But I totally get what Tita Wilma was trying to say. She was thinking about what we could all do that is more practical, more sustainable.

Project Pearls, an NGO run by volunteers, are doing a lot of good in the area. Apart from Feeding Programs (like the one we participated in) and Medical Missions, they also have an Educational Program that helps children go to school and stay in school. And that's a big thing because I believe, education will help these kids change their lives.

Here's sharing a few photos of that day.
